Attractions in Downtown Nashville to Explore on a Countrypolitan Getaway

Given Nashville’s one of the greatest cities for live music on the planet, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Downtown area’s chockablock with performance venues. Those range from the illustrious Ryman Auditorium—aka the “Mother Church of Country Music,” open for daily tours and still presenting better than 200 shows a year—to the no-cover-charge bars and clubs of Lower Broadway’s Honky Tonk Highway, where live music’s on offer each and every night of the year (and where legends such as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Gretchen Wilson cut their teeth).

Music’s also the focus of multiple world-class museums in the Downtown vicinity, not least the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, the 350,000-square-foot “Smithsonian of country music” anchored by the permanent exhibit Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music.

Then there’s the National Museum of African American Music, the only museum anywhere specially “dedicated to preserving and celebrating the many music genres created, influenced, and inspired by African-Americans.” Over at the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum, meanwhile, which covers all genres, you can clap eyes on instruments used by icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, and James Jamerson, plus learn more not only about stone-cold superstars but also often-unsung session players, including members of such outfits at the Wrecking Crew and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.

In Downtown Nashville, you can also stroll the handsome grounds of the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, landscaped with tulip-poplars and other native Tennessee trees and shrubs and host to the Tennessee Amphitheater, the Rivers of Tennessee Fountains, the Pathway of History, and World War II and other memorials. Adjoining Bicentennial Mall is another fine museum: the Tennessee State Museum, a prime spot for delving into the fascinating, multilayered history of the Volunteer State.
